FOR ESTABLISHED SCHOOLS
Taking your school overseas without losing what made it.
Established schools are increasingly approached to open campuses abroad. The opportunity is real, and so is the risk to a name that took decades to build.
GSE builds and runs the overseas school under your brand. We protect the legacy behind your name, deliver your model to the standard your own families would expect, and answer to your school for the result.
How the partnership is structured
Four parties, each with a defined role. Your school puts in no capital and owns no property overseas.
Property company
Owns the land and buildings. Usually held by the investor.
Operating company
Owns the school business and funds market research, set-up and pre-opening. Often the same investor, kept as a separate company from the start.
Your school
Licenses its name and educational model, sets the standards, and reviews how the new school meets them.
GSE
Builds and runs the school as operator, accountable to the owners for performance and to your school for standards.
Protection on both sides of the partnership
GSE’s founders led schools before they built them for investors. We understand what each side needs, and where the two can pull against each other.
For your school: legacy protected
Your name carries decades of trust. GSE carries your standards into the new school and delivers them to the level your own families would recognise, with your school reviewing the evidence every year.
For the investor: the model made to fit
A model built for one country has to be translated for another. GSE adapts curriculum, staffing, calendar and family engagement to the local culture and regulations, so the school suits the families it serves from opening day.
The questions your governors will ask
How much control do we keep?
The licence agreement sets out what must travel unchanged and what can adapt to the local market. Your school defines the standards. GSE operates to them and guarantees them to you, and your school reviews the results much as an accreditation or inspection body would.
What does it cost the school?
Market research, set-up and pre-opening are paid for by the investor. Your main contribution is time: senior staff and governors helping define the model, and regular review visits once the school is open.
What does the school receive?
A royalty on the overseas school’s gross revenue under the licence, usually alongside a service agreement covering professional development, teacher training and visits. The income is recurring and sits outside your own fee base. It often brings new career paths for staff and new opportunities for students as well.
Does a commercial venture fit our charitable status?
The overseas school sits in separate companies owned by the investor. Your school acts as licensor, and the income can be directed back into its own mission. Your legal and charity advisers will confirm how this fits your governing documents, and we work alongside them.
How GSE takes a school overseas
1. Define what travels
Much of what makes a school distinctive lives in its people and culture. We work with your leadership to set down the model, values and standards a new campus must carry.
2. Choose the market
Market research and feasibility to find where your name carries weight and families will choose it.
3. Find the right investor
GSE screens investors and partners on your behalf. We sit between the two as operator, so a poor match is our problem as much as yours.
4. Build and open
Design, licensing, recruitment and admissions, through to opening day.
5. Run and report
GSE manages the school under a long-term agreement and reports to your school against the standards you set.
If you want to run campuses yourself one day
Some schools aim to operate their own international campuses in time. That needs a different plan from licensing, and it is easier to build in from the start. We will set out both routes.
Talk to us about your school
GSE has advised established schools on international expansion, from a premium UK school brand forming a new group to a high-profile UAE school planning to grow from one campus to six. See our selected work.
Conversations are confidential, and an early one commits your school to nothing.
