Some tips for good communication during uncertain times:
How a message is delivered matters, especially communication during challenging times such as this. Some random thoughts over coffee this morning….

Leadership and how we communicate needs to be clear, honest, and compassionate. There can be a natural human tendency to downplay and delay decisions. Pausing to consider the best path of action is ok but inaction is dangerous. If you are not sure what to do, certainly pause, but find meaningful action. Others are looking to your next steps. Communication is invaluable.
People understand truth and transparency. Leadership that is not misleading is reassuring. Let’s not put a spin on things. We should update and communicate often, in a purposeful way. Honest and forthright communication is crucial.
Sharing empathy includes tapping into hurt, stress and vulnerability. Leadership is strengthened when we connect in to human experience and not just the big picture. “I hear you.” “I understand.” “I feel the same way.” “What I have found is…” Communication should be connected.
Being 100% logical and only a little empathetic might move things forward pragmatically but social and emotional well being needs to be attended to. Your logic might be protecting you but might also be disconnecting you from staff. A strong team member is someone who has armour and strength created by authentic connections with others.
What we can change and what we cant: Let’s acknowledge that there are some things we cannot change. By acknowledging that there are some “non-negotiables” we can then focus on the areas we might be able to impact. It frees our mind to concentrate on the areas we can have greater influence.
